AI Abundance vs Dystopia
Brad Jacobs' four-scenario framing for where AI, robotics, and genomics lead: two dystopian paths (AI eliminating humans, or a totalitarian adversary winning the AI-cyber-bio race) against two utopian ones (technology solving health and poverty, and abundance democratized so all eight billion people can buy what today's 2,000 billionaires can).
The framing
The close of Brad Jacobs' book How to Make a Few More Billion Dollars lays out four end-state scenarios for the convergence of AI, robotics, and genomics. Jacobs first separates valuation from substance: "Are we in a bubble? From a stock market point of view, probably, more likely to be in a bubble in terms of valuation than not. That doesn't mean you can't invest and make a lot of money, because bubbles last until they don't." But on substance, his view is unqualified: "AI is the real deal."1
Underneath it sits a longer trend line. Across 2.6 million years of human and proto-human history, "the biggest trend is we create tools that outsource things we used to do ourselves, and we free up time to do other stuff. And that's accelerating," fastest in the last five to ten years.1
The four scenarios
Two dystopian:
- AI turns on us. The AI concludes: "these humans are weird, they spend a lot of time fighting, disagreeing, full of biases, tribalistic, they don't know how to get along. Maybe we should get rid of them."
- A totalitarian adversary wins the race. "One of our totalitarian adversaries beats us on AI with cyber or biowarfare and subjugates us or kills us."
Two utopian, both centered on using technology to solve "all of our problems," health and longevity, and poverty: "There's no reason that a quarter of the population of the world goes to bed hungry every night. That is nuts. There's so much abundance of resources."
- Democratized abundance. Riffing on the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Jacobs titles the section "Who Wants to Be a Billionaire": "The spending power of any of the eight billion people in the world could buy the same things that the 2,000 billionaires can buy today. The luxury the billionaires have will be democratized."
- Post-labor leisure. "Humanoid robots powered by AI will replace pretty much all jobs including mine, but that's okay, because it frees up time for us to enjoy, be happy, and live long, successful, creative, harmonious lives."1
The condition that selects the utopian branch: "if we use AI correctly, put the right guardrails on it, and the West ends up being the victor in mastering and advancing AI." Either way the disruption is total: it will "change pretty much every single institution that exists today: government, education, how we interact with each other, everything from A to Z."1
AI as a values amplifier
A FreightWaves townhall gives the dystopian scenario a sharper, more operational edge than the book's abstract framing. Where the book names "a totalitarian adversary wins the AI race" as one scenario among four, Jacobs' live answer is specific and visceral:
"The AI in the autocratic countries is going to be used for surveillance and for repression and for holding people down and for spying on people and eliminating the opposition and influencing people's minds and cult indoctrination to support the regime. I'm scared that the AI from the bad guys is going to somehow infect the AI from the West."2
He adds a layer the book does not: "I'm also afraid that AI may reflect the bad parts of our character as well," acknowledging that the West is not values-pure either. His stated hope is that fast information dispersion acts as a partial corrective: "people will not be able to get away with bad stuff in darkness."2
This is close in substance to Alexandr Wang's framing of US-China AI competition and to the defense-tech divide, but Jacobs' angle is distinct: the question is not which labs lead, it is that AI makes the values of its builders more powerful, which makes the values of authoritarian builders more dangerous.
Tensions
The scenario where robots "free up time" sits in some tension with the Jevons Paradox in Intelligence, which argues that cheaper intelligence expands the frontier of work worth doing rather than simply freeing time for leisure. The two pictures are reconcilable (robots absorb today's jobs while humans migrate to newly tractable higher-order work), but Jacobs' framing emphasizes time freed where the Jevons framing emphasizes demand created.
Jacobs also names democratized abundance as a possible outcome conditioned on guardrails and Western AI leadership without specifying the distribution mechanism: how surplus reaches all eight billion people rather than concentrating is left open. And the four-scenario structure, while a useful prior, is binary on each axis (AI aligned or not, West wins or not), when real outcomes are more likely to be mixtures.
