Financial System for the AI Transition
Jeff Yan's thesis that before AI hits self-improving escape velocity, humanity must build a programmable, accessible financial system AI agents can plug into, with humans holding a stake. Once intelligence is machine-driven, value transfer will be too, and the legacy financial system cannot host it, so the rails must be built now or humans risk being cut out of the system that replaces the current one.
The thesis that the most important thing crypto can build, and the reason to stay in the space despite an AI-driven talent drain and a flat market, is a programmable, accessible, permissionless financial system that AI agents can plug into, while humans still hold a stake in it. Build it before AI hits escape velocity, or humans risk being cut out of the financial system that machine intelligence creates around itself.
Explanation
The ticking clock. Jeff Yan's framing is that humanity has one very important job as a species, with a ticking time bomb attached: AI will, in the near future, hit self-improving escape velocity and largely supplant human intelligence. His own caveat is that it is not as close as people think, since in his view AI cannot yet write good code, and important code should not be written by AI. He calls himself a bit of a holdout, but adds: "it's going to happen."1
The value-follows-intelligence argument. Once intelligence is largely machine-driven, the value transfer will largely be machine-driven as well. If machines do the thinking and the deciding, they will also do the transacting; the question is on what rails.
The legacy system cannot host it. There is no way that AI will plug into the existing legacy financial system, in Yan's words, it's just not possible.1 The reason is that in legacy finance, code and value are not on the same playing field: money lives in permissioned, identity-gated, human-operated ledgers that are not natively programmable, while code lives elsewhere and reaches money only through brittle, gated interfaces. Machine-speed, machine-native value transfer needs money that is itself code.
The stakes for humans. The job is not just to build agent rails, it is to build rails in which humans have a stake. If the only financial system AI can use is one humans do not own a piece of, then humans will be cut out of the financial system that replaces the current one.1 Building programmable, accessible, human-owned rails now is how humanity keeps a seat at the table after the transition. Crypto's distinctive property, in this framing, is that being early to a network lets ordinary people become meaningful owners of it, which is the mechanism by which humans hold a stake.
Why Hyperliquid is what Yan calls "our best shot." The infrastructure is not built by one team, in Yan's words Hyperliquid is "a collective effort to build a family of primitives, companies, etc. that interact." Because it is autonomous, fair, open, and permissionless, the reasoning goes, "when the AI overlords come, they will adopt it": no onboarding, no compliance approval, and no bank account to deploy a market or pay a fee. Neutral, permissionless architecture is, in this framing, also AI-readiness architecture.1
Why it matters
This reframes crypto's purpose against the AI narrative that has drained talent and attention from the space. The usual defense of crypto is financial inclusion or censorship resistance for humans today. This defense is forward-looking and existential: crypto is the substrate for the post-AGI economy, and that substrate has a deadline, since it must exist and be human-owned before machine intelligence builds its own economy on whatever rails it can reach. It turns why stay in crypto from a returns question into a stakes-in-the-future question, and it bridges the near-term reality that agents already transact through stablecoin micropayments on permissionless rails to a longer time horizon where the ownership question becomes central.
Tensions and open questions
The thesis conveniently arrives at the conclusion that Yan's own infrastructure is the most important project on Earth; the structural argument, that legacy rails cannot host machine-native value transfer, stands on its own, but the specific conclusion that any one protocol is the best shot is an interested party's claim. Whether traditional financial rails could adapt to agent-native payment patterns without adopting crypto at all is a live counter-argument that incumbents would contest. Yan simultaneously calls AGI a ticking time bomb and says it is not as close as people think, so the urgency of the thesis depends on a timeline he is openly uncertain about. And while humans have a stake is the moral core of the argument, token ownership tends to concentrate over time, so whether broad human ownership, rather than a new crypto-native elite, actually results is an unresolved distributional question.
